Burma junta minister's son involves in a car accident
Aug 18, 2006 (DVB) - A car driven by the son of one of Burmas
military junta, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC)
ministers, hit a trishaw killing its driver on the spot in July, a
police officer told DVB.
Although, Minister Soe Thas son Aung Soe Tha was arrested soon after
the accident, no action was taken against him and he was eventually
released scotch free due to an order from above, according to the
officer.
Normally, if someone is found guilty of killing someone in a car
accident, he or she could expect at least a 10 year jail term, but
Aung Soe Tha was detained only one month and released. The officer
added that during his detention in Rangoon Insein Jail, Aung Soe Tha
stayed in a separate house protected by guards. He was picked up by
his father personally in the early morning and returned to the prison
in the evening.
A news journal which carried the report of the incident was also
threatened with closure by Aung Soe Tha, an editor of the journal
said. The incident came amid the reports of the arrests and
imprisonments of many people whose only crime is failing to register
themselves as night guests, causing anger to the victims family
members and legal experts.
A similar incident also occurred in 1994 when the now ousted former
ambassador Brig-Gen Kyaw Wins son Htut Kyaw Win car hit a university
student named Yeh Win and killed him outright. Htut Kyaw Win was also
detained in a special house protected by guards and he was also
allowed to take exams there. Like Aung Soe Tha, Htut Kyaw Win was
allowed to go out during the day and return to the prison at night and
he was released within days.
